The day finally came..... we had to say goodbye to our beloved Jewels. She was the best dog ever, not a mean bone in her body.... she loved everyone and everything. Through God's grace and mercy, I was allowed the time I needed to come to terms with this. He made me the animal loving gal that I am and I know that He orchestrated all of this, right down to the fact that I had taken two days off work, so that it would not be as difficult on me.
She was fifteen and failing more every day - it was time - this day she developed what I believe the vet said was paralysis of the diaphragm - she could not breath. I'm sure she would not have made it through the night and neither of us wanted her to suffer any more than she was. We loaded her into the backseat of my truck and took her to the Emergency Vet Clinic in Anderson. They were absolutely the best. They allowed us to leave her in the truck and administered the drugs right there. I had never had to do this before.... it was hard, but the right thing to do...... it was time.
She was a good dog and helped us raise a number of puppies. The day we brought our GSP, GiGi home Jewels jumped through the bedroom window to welcome her. As I said before, she loved everything. I will never forget her kind soul. Rest in peace my dear friend. Wait for me at the bridge and we will cross together.
Two winters ago I was afraid she would pass when the ground was frozen and John wouldn't be able to bury her. I had the same fear last winter. John always assured me that he would get her buried, somehow - some way. But we said goodbye on June 6, 2016 and the ground wasn't frozen and in fact was a little soft from a recent rain.
The first time I held her as a puppy I felt this energy surge through me. We were grieving the disappearance of our first Chocolate Lab, Abby and one of my friends at work, Sandy Warden, said it was "healing". I will never forget that and believe that was just what it was. A short time after we brought Jewels home we received a call from a rabbit hunter who had found Abby - it appeared she had been hit by a train. Many tears where cried but we had closure for Abby and were able to move on with the help of our precious Jewels.
